Mack Trucks Match Review - Reserves vs Wilston Grange
RESERVES GO DOWN IN TIGHT MATCH
The Western Magpies Reserves were gallant in defeat against third placed Wilston Grange on Saturday.
The Pies were in the match until mid way through the final quarter when the Gorillas sealed the match with two late goals. The Pies went down by 25 points, 11.10-76 to 7.9- 51.
A slow start by the Magpies had them on the back foot immediately as Wilston Grange kicked 5 first quarter goals.
The Magpies hit back with a dominant second quarter to lead by 6 points at half time.
However the home side worked their way back into the match in the third quarter and then were able to take control late in the final quarter. The Magpies decision making after half time let them down with kicks often going straight to the opposition or kicking to outnumbered teammates.
The Magpies were missing several key players which told in the end. Veteran Chris Mihalopoulos, who backed up from a full game on Friday night booted 3 goals for the Pies but the young players struggled in the end against bigger bodied opponents.
Best players were defenders Gabe McKinnon and Sean McEvoy, midfielders Logan Murray, Bryce Crossley and Ben Hooper.
Liam Dwyer returning from long term injury also played well in ruck.
Despite the loss the Pies are still a chance to make the finals with very winnable matches in their last 5 games.
