MACK TRUCK REVIEW - DOMINANT 3RD QUARTER SETS UP VICTORY
A seven goal third quarter set up a relatively comfortable victory for the Western Magpies over Surfers Paradise by 49 points, 16.14 -110 to 9.7 - 61.
Played in deceptively blustery conditions at Surfers Paradise which favoured the change room end, both side were guilty of poor disposal and inaccurate goalkicking early in the match.
The Pies led by 17 points at half time after a tight first half with plenty of congested and contested football.
In the third quarter the Magpies opened up the play and with their run and carry took control and dominated the quarter with seven goals to the Demons two.
The final quarter was played out with a minimum of fuss, although the Demons booted three quick goals early in the quarter after the Pies sat back a bit. The Pies were sparked into action again and were able to finish the quarter stronger to be comfortable victors.
Midfielders Drew Mitchell and Val Pope were again ball magnets. Pope sparked the Pies early and new dad Mitchell was in everything in the engine room as well as kicking two goals, continuing his habit of hitting the scoreboard, much to his coach's delight.
Dom Beer had his hands full in ruck early against a Surfers Paradise pair who were mobile but he stuck to the task and with support from Alex Dickfos gradually got on top which was the catalyst for the Pies dominant third quarter.
Dickfos' ruck work is improving each week and he capped a good game with 4 goals.
Luke Scott and Sean Mewing lifted after the early ankle injury to Matt Davis and both read the play well to take numerous intercept marks. Callum Carseldine was again in and under all day to win plenty of hard ball for the Pies and youngster Riley Easton was again busy up forward.
The Pies remain a game clear in third place on the ladder and sit second on percentage and host old rival Palm Beach Currumbin at Chelmer next Saturday.
Davis will miss but the Pies should regain ruckman Hayden Thick after illness and winger Aaron Maricic, who turned out for the Lions Reserves in the NEAFL on the weekend.
Coach’s thoughts:
Glenn Humphrey – Western Magpies
“It was a bit of a scrappy game early but after half time we got away. We pretty much had control, but we couldn’t get the scoreboard pressure that we wanted, hence they stayed in the game until half time.
“We converted well in third quarter which blew them out of the game.
“We won the ball, controlled the football, but just kicked a number of points in the second quarter that were all getable. To their credit they stuck at it and we snuck away bit by bit.”
Peter Young – Surfers Paradise
“They are a good side, their set up and structures around the stoppages are really good, I love the way they go about it.”
“Hopefully our young group can take something out of that.
“They stuck at it today, we were good in the midfield but they controlled that much of the footy we didn’t get a chance to run.”
“We just need to take the game on a bit more, and not worry about turning it over.
