Coopers Friday Night Footy - Match Review
Andrew Thomson
The Woodsmen travelled to Coorparoo on Friday night to take on the UQ Red Lions in windy conditions. With a few debutants in the side and the Woodies looking to bounce back, it was a strong start early with the Woodsmen banging home 5 goals in the first quarter to take a 27 point lead at the first break. The run from defence was a strong feature in particular with Kiran Verma, Matty Prior and Jamie Page pushing hard for handball receives to link up through the midfield. Tom Roderick and Alec Parsons were strong on the wings, with Roderick in particular impressing with his work rate.
In the clinches, Judson and Curtis were supreme – despite the dominance of UQ’s giant ruckman – the Woodies continually won it out of the middle to push forward where the prehistoric forwardline of Mihalopoulous, Evans and Hockley were getting aerial dominance – but struggled somewhat when the ball hit the deck! The injection of Fuentes, Banim or similar into this side in coming weeks will be crucial!
The Woodsmen added a further 3 goals per quarter to slowly grind away a 13 goal win against a hard running and spirited opposition is what was a solid performance ahead of this weeks matchup with defending back to back Premiers the Zillmere Eagles at McCarthy Homes Oval.
Woodsmen 14.15 - 99 defeated UQ 3.3 - 21
Best: Judson, Curtis, Verma, Parsons, Page, Hockley
Goals: Hockley 7, Evans 3, Parsons 2, Roderick, Hocking 1
